Socially Engaged art, Race and Photography

Jagdish Patel is working on a PhD examining the intersections of anti-racism and socially engaged art in the Midlands at Coventry Univerity. Over the past decade, he has been working primarily around the themes of anti-racism, community and well-being. He was previously the Deputy Director of the human rights charity, the Monitoring Group in London and continues to work with anti-racist groups across the country, and to research and write on issues relating to race, secular politics, communities, policing and Black and Asian history. Much of his work is through a process of research-based collaborative art practice.

ReFramed is providing a unique informal social space for photographers and visual artists. The ‘First Thursday’ meet-up is specifically for Black, Asian and other people of colour photography collections. It is the only monthly social platform in the Midlands to meet, network, get support and feedback. It is free to attend, but we do ask you to book a ticket in advance of the event and also indicate if you intend to bring work to show.

Our broad aims for the group are;

- to provide a space for you to share work-in-progress and receive constructive written and verbal feedback from your peers

- to provide a space for discussion and learning about issues around photography and race,

to help you develop an awareness of the issues around race, the post-colonial, and the decolonial within your practice

- to provide a space for you to network and perhaps think about collaboration

Each social lasts about 1.5 hours and consists of

a. A learning with an invited speaker talking about the work of a photographer or writer of a book which may be useful for your development

b. an opportunity to preview projects in their development stage, offer peer-to-peer feedback

PLEASE NOTE This note this event is ONLY for Black, Asian and other photographers of colour.

This session is part of a two-part series with examines the issues of race, ethics and social engagement in photography.
